Hospitals need humidity control because relative humidity (RH) levels directly affect airborne pathogen viability, patient immune response, surgical site infection risk, and electrostatic hazards near medical equipment and supplemental oxygen. Regulatory compliance...
Operating rooms in acute care hospitals must maintain relative humidity between 20% and 60%, per ASHRAE Standard 170 and the FGI Guidelines, which underpin CMS Conditions of Participation. That range isn’t universal: ambulatory surgery centers accredited by ACHC...
Hospitals must maintain relative humidity within ranges that vary by space type. Under ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170-2021, operating rooms require 20 to 60% RH, while most patient care areas fall within 30 to 60%. These aren’t comfort thresholds, they’re...
When indoor relative humidity drops below 30% RH, it compromises the physiological defenses that patients depend on during recovery. Mucociliary clearance slows, epithelial barriers weaken, and airborne pathogen transmission increases. This article covers the...
Maintaining relative humidity between 40% and 60% in hospital environments reduces the viability of airborne pathogens, supports respiratory mucosal defenses, and has been associated with lower rates of hospital-acquired infections. This isn’t convention,...
Maintaining relative humidity (RH) between 40% and 60% has been shown to significantly reduce the viability of airborne respiratory viruses, including influenza A and SARS-CoV-2, according to peer-reviewed research. The evidence is grounded in controlled laboratory...
