Understanding Relative Humidity

The Number That's Right — or Wrong — for Your Facility

Relative humidity shifts with temperature, which makes "good" a moving target. Indoor mode tells you not just what your RH is, but whether it's right for your specific environment.

Relative humidity is the ratio of water vapor currently in the air to the maximum the air can hold at that temperature, as a percentage. At 100% the air is saturated and condensation begins; at 0% it's completely dry.

The word "relative" is the catch: warm air holds more moisture than cool air, so as temperature rises, RH falls even when no moisture is added or removed. That's why controlling indoor humidity means managing both moisture and temperature — and why a steam humidifier that also adds heat creates a moving target that's harder and costlier to hold.

For general occupied spaces, ASHRAE Standard 55 recommends 30–60% RH, with 40–50% ideal for most people. Industrial facilities are far more specific: data centers need 40–60%, pharmaceutical cleanrooms run 35–65%, and cold storage may require 85–95%. Below 30% RH the body loses moisture faster, causing dry eyes, cracked skin, sore throats, and higher susceptibility to respiratory infections — influenza survival and transmission rise sharply below 40%. For electronics, electrostatic discharge becomes frequent below 40% RH and can instantly destroy sensitive components, with a single event causing thousands in damage.
Most mold needs sustained RH above 60% to colonize, with rapid growth above 70%. On porous surfaces like drywall and wood, mold can establish within 24–48 hours at 70%+ RH. Because RH is relative to temperature. Warm air holds more water vapor than cool air. Cool 72°F/50% air down to 60°F without adding or removing moisture and RH rises to about 78% — the actual water content hasn't changed, only the air's capacity to hold it. Facilities with temperature swings therefore see dramatic RH shifts, which is why fast, uniform humidity control matters.
