Owners of bakeries must take precautions to ensure the safety of their employees in many ways. One of these ways is by educating their employees about the dangers of breathing in flour dust. Flour and bakery dust has been known to cause eye irritation, nose and throat irritation, and even occupational asthma. If an employee is constantly exposed to and breathing in flour and bakery dust, they can have attacks of breathlessness and wheezing.

To protect all employees working in a bakery from the dangers of flour and bakery dust exposure, owners should install a dust suppression system. A dust suppression system is the best way to eliminate the risk of airborne particles being breathed in by workers.

There are other ways to reduce the amount of flour that is being breathed in and that is to avoid raising a lot of dust when working, work slowly when using either your hands or mixers, using respiratory protective equipment such as masks when working, and clean up using wet materials or an industrial strength vacuum cleaner. Wearing gloves and other protective gear will help to eliminate flour exposure. And make sure all work areas are repeatedly cleaned so as not to have a build up of excess flour.

Education is key, and all employees should be aware of the ways to protect themselves and each other. If you do have a dust suppression system installed, you are giving your employees the gift of knowing they are being protected and that you value their health.
